Advocate Health invests over $6B in community benefit

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Advocate Health last year contributed $6.05 billion in community benefit, solidifying the health system’s position as a national leader in providing charitable care and services. The investment, a 2.6% increase over the previous year, builds on Advocate Health’s commitment to advancing health equity, improving affordability and providing higher-quality care.

With a focus on addressing unique community needs across its six states and making financial assistance more accessible, the organization’s contribution equates to more than $16 million a day.

“This community benefit report is evidence of our commitment to making a significant impact in all the communities we serve to make health care more accessible for all – including by addressing the social drivers that impact people's health,” Advocate Health Chief Executive Officer Eugene A. Woods said. “I am inspired on a daily basis by our team's dedication to providing nationally leading care, not just within our facilities, but well beyond our walls and into vulnerable communities in greatest need.”

Advocate Health gives back to its communities through free and discounted care for low-income patients, as well as undercompensated care for those on Medicare and Medicaid. Meanwhile, a range of programs tailored to individual communities aim to increase access to healthy food, safe housing, trauma-informed care and other vital services.

Additional community benefit investments include:

  • Community health programs, such as behavioral health services, screenings, immunizations and school-based health care
  • Education to train physicians, nurses, allied health and other health professionals
  • Advancing medical research and promoting innovation
  • Contributions of equipment and supplies

“This investment embodies our deeply held belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive physically, mentally and socially,” Kinneil Coltman, Advocate Health’s chief community and social impact officer, said. “We remain focused on building resilience within the communities we’re so privileged to serve, as we know this work is key to disrupting the root causes of health inequities.”
