Thanks to philanthropy, more patients in Washington County have access to specialized rehabilitation equipment that can help them gain strength and mobility following an illness or injury.

Donated funds were recently used to purchase a T4 NuStep cross trainer and two sci-fit recumbent steppers for the cardiac rehabilitation department at Aurora Medical Center – Washington County. Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program designed to help patients recover after a heart attack, heart surgery or other cardiac events. It combines exercise training, education and emotional support to improve cardiovascular health and quality of life.

“The new equipment has positively impacted many patients already,” shared Meagan Nelson, exercise specialist at Aurora Washington County. “The machines are more accessible for more patients, including those who are very tall, bariatric or use a wheelchair. We’re also seeing more patients with multiple medical conditions. Being able to have newer pieces of equipment to accommodate the patients’ increasing needs has made a huge difference in their care and recovery.”

One patient who had an aortic valve replacement shared that he uses the new equipment almost every time he comes to the cardiac rehab department.

“I like the screen that displays the hills and valleys. I feel it’s very motivating and keeps my brain busy,” he said. “I am a competitive person and like to get my numbers higher each time I use it. The seat is adjustable and accommodates my height of 6’ 5” so I am able to get more leg extension compared to other machines.”

He feels he’s gotten stronger and steadier on his feet.

“My balance has improved and I feel better overall. And the entire team here is great; they’re so kind, caring and compassionate. They listen to me and address my concerns.”

Another patient, who had a stent placed at Aurora Medical Center – Grafton, opted to do cardia rehab at Aurora Washington County since it was only two blocks away.

“I feel I’m getting stronger, and I’m able to work hard every day. I’m very impressed with the exercise equipment they have here. The staff are all very positive and encouraging; they’re always smiling.”
