Imagine the grit and determination it takes to overcome cancer. Now, picture those same survivors diving into the world of triathlons – running, cycling and swimming their way to renewed strength and confidence. This is the inspiring story of each participant in the powerful Aurora Health Care Team Phoenix. Nev's Ink, a manufacturer of pressure-sensitive labels and tapes for the health care industry, is proud to be part of their journey. Since 2019, the company has donated over $150,000 to Team Phoenix, helping nearly 500 survivor triathletes reclaim their lives.
“We share Team Phoenix's commitment to pushing boundaries,” says Gary Nevermann, President and Owner of Nev's Ink. “When I started the company in 1989, my small team poured their hearts into their work, supporting each other and even caring for one another's children during late-night shifts – forging a strong foundation of perseverance and teamwork. From our humble beginnings, we share the spirit of overcoming obstacles and achieving ambitious goals that define Team Phoenix.”
Close to home
Last year, the fight against cancer became deeply personal for Gary Nevermann.
“Before Christmas, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and suddenly, my world fell apart. You don't truly understand the impact until it happens to you. My first thought was, ‘I have a huge family, and it feels like the world is coming to an end,’” Gary shared.
He recalls the support he received from an Aurora Health Care Cancer Navigator. “He was honest with me. He said it would hurt, I’d be embarrassed, and I would feel lost. I now understand the devastation and uncertainty that survivors of Team Phoenix face.”
Team Phoenix
They stared down cancer, faced grueling treatments and emerged stronger than ever. This extraordinary group of cancer survivors embarks on a transformative 14-week journey of running, cycling and swimming. Team Phoenix athletes like Roxanne Jilk say the program gave her a new outlook on life as she conquered the course with the team for the first time.
“Crossing the finish line was amazing to do with these women. It gave me my confidence back for a distorted body. I'm cut everywhere. I have scars everywhere. I learned it didn't matter what your body looked like in a swimsuit. It's so much bigger than that,” said Roxanne.
A deep commitment to Team Phoenix
Team Phoenix is entirely run on donations and relies heavily on the generosity of supporters to operate. This funding fuels essential Team Phoenix programs, like a Learn to Swim pre-season session, a Triathlon Training program with Group Tri Training, Team Phoenix scholarships for those who need financial support to participate, an Online Training Site, Healthy Lifestyle Workshops, and access to an Alumnae Group that offers training, educational and camaraderie year-round.
Partnership continues
To further support Team Phoenix, Nev's Ink, and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation (VLCF) host an annual Bags Tournament in their parking lot, donating all proceeds to the program. In 2024, the tournament raised nearly $53,000 for the program. This year's 10th annual Bags Tournament will be held Sunday, June 22. All proceeds will be donated to Team Phoenix. Save the date and learn more about the tournament.
“The generosity of VLCF and Nev's Ink has helped Team Phoenix expand its reach – bringing together over 476 women cancer survivors to rediscover strength, joy and connection through fitness, education, and community,” says Ilka Hoffins, Team Phoenix Program Director. “It's so special to be able to join in at the tournament– an incredible event powered by heartfelt dedication and team spirit from everyone at Nev's Ink.”
Team Phoenix is only possible through the generosity of donors. Help make a difference for cancer survivors by making a gift today.
